Cushions and pillows, indoors and out

The Sewing Loft designs, makes and recovers both indoor and outdoor cushions and pillows. A tired seat cushion can often keep its shape and get new cloth, and a new one can be built from scratch to fit the piece it sits on.

The fabric shelves at 2105 Lawn Ave. in Norwood include indoor/outdoor cloth alongside fabrics suited to bedding, pillows and upholstery, so the cushion on a porch bench and the cushion on a living room sofa can each get the right cloth.

A window seat built for how you use it

If your home has a window seat, the cushion on it deserves its own design. The shop builds a custom cushion for how you mean to use the space. Tea and a good book, anyone? A reading seat wants a different build than a bench by the back door.

Fitted bench cushions are part of the same work. The grey cushion in the prints below is fitted to a mudroom bench, a long way from a plush reading seat, and both start with a measurement taken in the room.

Piping, fringe, trim and your style voice

Pillows, bolsters and bedding are where trim does its work. Contrast piping on a lumbar pillow, fringe on a bolster or a ribbon edge on a plain cover changes how the whole sofa or bed reads. The shop describes the goal as helping you find your style voice and display it proudly, even if it is only through subtle patterns and colours.

The process starts with in-home measurement and consultation by appointment, then yardage calculations worked out on paper before a bolt is cut. Choose from the Norwood fabric selection or bring your own, as long as it is the right quality for the job. Partner designers are available for paint and fabric colour advice.
